One jeroboam [3L] Schug Carneros Estate Winery 2012 Pinot Noir
Schug Carneros Estate began when a passion for Pinot Noir led patriarch Walter Schug to establish his own label and leave Joseph Phelps, where he was the founding winemaker crafting wines that put Napa Valley on the map. Now the family-owned winery is entering a new chapter, with dynamic young German-American winemaker Johannes Scheid bringing modern touches to the estate’s European-styled wines. Schug’s 100-year-old heritage — stemming from a Pinot Noir estate in Germany’s Rheingau region originally planted in the 12th century — spanned an era of pioneering winemaking in Napa Valley before putting down roots in the cool-climate, wind-swept Carneros hills in Sonoma. Today, Walter’s children are preserving their family’s rich winemaking legacy for generations to come.
The 2012 class Carneros region Pinot Noir offers a wide range of flavors and aromas, in the tradition of the finest red Burgundies of France; “Clonal diversity” is achieved by carefully blending several vineyard lots, each retaining its own unique clonal signature in the blend. The result is a complex wine with a rich bouquet of cherries, berries, and hints of spicy new oak. It has flavors reminiscent of black cherry, currant, and strawberry, followed by a rich, spicy texture and a long silky finish. This wine pairs nicely with lamb, duck, even grilled fish, and will improve with additional cellaring for 2-5 years.

Ridge Vineyards was our 2019 L’Amour du Vin featured winery with then-winemaker Eric Baugher in attendance to introduce the wines. Ridge calls their approach to winemaking “pre-industrial.” They believe that for anyone attempting to make fine wine, modern additives, and industrial processing limit true quality. Relying on the natural yeast, they let the terroir de-fine the wine and make their winemaking decisions based upon taste, not a recipe. They believe in transparency and as a result, they include a list of ingredients on every wine they make. They are committed to sustainability and organic farming and are the largest grower of organically certified grapes in Sonoma County and the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation.
In 1972, Ridge made its first Lytton Springs from vines planted on the eastern half of the vineyard at the turn of the century. Both the eastern and western portions of the vineyard were purchased in the early 1990s. In the 1870s, under “Captain” William Litton’s ownership, the two were part of one property and the spelling evolved to “Lytton” by 1903. The vineyard is planted to Zinfandel and its principal complementary varietals.
Ridge’s 2017 Lytton Springs opens up beautifully, with bright acids that drive a whole range of red/purplish fruit intermingled with floral notes. Creamy and ample in feel…boasts superb balance and pedigree. Nose of plum, blackberry, and licorice. Plentiful raspberry fruit on entry with notes of pepper sage, well-coated tannins of long layered finish. Rated 94 by Antonio Galloni (Vinous Media), 94 by James Suckling, and 91 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
And, this offering is presented in an incredible three-liter bottle. A collector’s dream! How could you resist!?

One magnum [1.5L] Merus 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley.
Merus began as the quintessential “garage wine,” made by Merus founders Erika J. Gottl and Mark Herold in the two-car garage behind their home in the town of Napa. The wine won international renown starting with its first vintage in 1998, but the garage imposed serious limitations. When William Foley brought Merus into his Foley Family Wines group at the end of 2007, one of his first goals was to find a Napa Valley winery site worthy of the brand. A few months later, he acquired a historic ranch tucked into a canyon on the east side of the valley. One of Napa’s fabled “ghost wineries,” it had been abandoned in the wake of Prohibition and only recently brought back to life. Now the fully updated winery includes custom-made winemaking equipment and 7,000 square feet of caves for barrel storage. The winery’s new tasting salon and a second tasting area in the caves were stunningly renovated by Merus co-founder Erika Gottl’s Amsterdam-based UXUS design consultancy.
This Merus 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon has lovely notes of dark berries, espresso, mocha, grilled herbs and sweet spices which comes together in a pleasant, easy, charming style. Ripe, silky tannins typical of the vintage support the fruit for a long, beautifully balanced finish. This wine earned a 92 rating from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate. Drink between 2014-2024.

Cakebread Cellars was founded in 1973, while Jack and Dolores Cakebread were casually taking photographs of the area. After two years of work, they released the first Cakebread wine in 1974. Starting with only one vineyard, 22 acres of land, they have now expanded to having 16 vineyards. The two featured wines listed for auction are both from the Napa Valley vineyard. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals aromas of ripe blackberry and boysenberry, with hints of dark chocolate and sweet oak. The dark fruit is balanced with fresh acidity and lush tannins lingering an elegant finish of minerality. This wine can be enjoyed with by lamb burgers to filet mignon and fire-roasted portabello mushrooms. Rated a 91 by Wine Searcher. The 2019 Chardonnay opens with aromas of ripe golden apple, white peach, and notes of oak. On the palate, apple and pear characters are balanced by fresh acidity, and the finish is clean, with appealing mineral notes. This is a versatile food-pairing wine—enjoy and love it with fresh salads, grilled scallops, and nearly any selection of cheeses.

Two magnums [1.5L] Turley Wine Cellars, one each: 2008 Hayne Vineyard Petite Syrah and 2013 Cerdarman Zinfandel.
Turley Wine Cellars was founded in Napa Valley by former emergency room physician Larry Turley in 1993. Under the direction of winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, Turley now makes 50 different wines from over 50 vineyards across California. By farming organically and focusing on old vine vineyards of these varieties, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.
Otty Hayne, descendent of a pioneering California family and former mayor of St. Helena, planted the Hayne Petite Syrah in 1953 while he was home from college visiting his grandfather. All head-trained, dry-farmed and organic, this Petite Syrah is one of the most unique wines in California. Powerful and inky in its youth, the wine becomes more feminine and refined with age and will outlive us all.
Cedarman is a propriety blend of fruit from both Rattlesnake Ridge and Dragon Vineyards, located at the top of Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. Although primarily Zinfandel, we use a small amount of Petite Syrah from the Rattlesnake Vineyard as well. The result is a truly powerful, dense and wild wine, long on flavor.

Two magnums [1.5L] Arista Winery 2019 Russian River Valley wines, one each: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
L’Amour du Vin 2020 Featured Winery Arista, was founded in 2002 by Texas natives Al and Janis McWilliams. Their belief that the finest examples of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are produced in small lots has led to an emphasis on quality over quantity, evident in the limited-production wines produced. Today, their sons Mark and Ben continue this tradition, pursuing and cultivating vineyards that reflect the unique characteristics of the Russian River Valley.
Arista’s 36-acre estate is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley on Westside Road. This iconic stretch of terroir is known as the Middle Reach of Russian River Valley and sits just outside the idyllic Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. Here, Arista cultivates nine-acres of Pinot Noir and one-acre of Chardonnay. The heritage selections propagated across the estate were hand-picked by the McWilliams family, including vines from many historic vineyards within the Russian River Valley.
This offering, from the McWilliams Family, includes two bottles from their 2019 vintages.
The Pinot Noir is made with a modest amount of new oak to allow the character of the vintage to take center stage. On the nose, copious amounts of juicy blue and red fruits testify to the arm, dry growing season. The palate boasts an exquisite purity of fruit centered on crushed cherries and fresh raspberries.
The Chardonnay is a blend of the three Russian River Valley vineyards: Diablo Vineyard on Eastside Road, Banfield on Martinelli Road, and Ritchie. This wine is also made with modest amount of new oak to allow the fruit to take center stage and has a great richness and silkiness, yet still possessing firm structure.
Although the recently released 2019 vintage is not yet rated, past vintages received high marks (90+) from critics and these wines are sure to be winners!

Two magnums [1.5L] Bergström 2014 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon; one each: Le Pré Du Col Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge AVA; and Silice Vineyard, Chehalem Mountains AVA.
Since 1999, the Bergström family and team have been working towards their vision of stewarding natural and responsibly farmed, estate vineyard terroirs that best represent the diverse appellations of world-class Willamette Valley. The Bergström’s Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, and Syrahs are a three-dimensional vinous tour of Oregon’s ancient volcanic and marine sedimentary hillsides. But here, it’s all about the Pinot Noir!
Le Pré du Col means the ‘field on the hill’ or ‘the meadow on the mountain pass’ and the vineyard has been managed by the partnership of the Hill family and Bergström since its inception in 2006. It’s the first vineyard you’ll meet driving up the prestigious Ribbon Ridge AVA. Few appellations in North America evoke such sentiment and passion for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the Ribbon Ridge AVA. This narrow, ancient, oceanic hillside, only 6 square miles in totality, has been the home to some of Oregon’s finest bottlings of wine. It is from these ancient, 60-million-year-old sandy sea-beds that some of Bergström Wines’ most evocative Pinot Noirs are being crafted. The 2014 included in this lot is a beautiful pale to medium ruby-purple color with delightful notes of rose hip, tea, and a hint of cranberry. This wine finishes long and earthy. Rated by Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate – 92, Wine Spectator – 94, and James Suckling – 93. Drink this delightful wine for years to come!
The second bottle is from Silice Vineyard, french for “Silica,” located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. This rolling hillside on top of Calkins Lane blessed with an all-day sun exposure and strong winds all year long, is perfectly situated for ripening complex, spicy, and structured wines. This 2014 offering has a very dark ruby color. Robustly aromatic showcasing the sweet spicy and floral character that the silica-rich soils are known for with notes of gingerbread, black licorice/anise, sweet violets, dark raspberry, red roses, black cherry, and tar. The flavor profile is of sweet candied dark fruits enveloped in suave but copious fine-grained tannins. Rated by Wine Enthusiast – 95, James Suckling – 94, and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91. A fantastic wine ready to drink now or cellar through 2030.
What an amazing duo of high-scoring Pinots!

One magnum [1.5L] Joseph Phelps 2013 Insigna Red Wine, Napa Valley.
Founded in 1973, the Joseph Phelps Winery farms 425 acres of vines in Napa Valley on nine estate vineyards. Joseph Phelps ran his namesake winery with a vision, an unwavering commitment to quality and a strong taste for innovation. In 1974, Joe created what is arguably his most important legacy: California’s very first proprietary red Bordeaux-style blend – Insignia. His idea, to blend the finest wine lots of the vintage into one bottling, was revolutionary for its time, though it was a model quickly adopted by other prominent Napa Valley producers. The wine brought recognition not only to Joseph Phelps Vineyards, but ultimately to Napa Valley as a whole.
The 2013 Insignia marks the 40th vintage of the winery’s flagship Napa Valley wine. Deeply pigmented, the wine opens with heady blackberry and plum aromatics laced with baking spices, cardamom and espresso. Focused and fresh, this exceptionally concentrated wine showcases elegant tannin structure and a silky mouthfeel layered with dark fruit, sweet vanilla bean, cracked black pepper and bittersweet chocolate. Rated 98+ points by The Wine Advocate and awarded 95 points and ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

A six-bottle “sucrée” collection of French dessert wines – three demi bottles [375mL], one each:
- Chateau d’Yquem 2001 Sauternes [375mL]
- Chateau Raymond-Lafon 2003 Sauternes [375mL]
- M. Chapoutier 2003 Vionie’ de Paille de l’Ardèche Viognier [375mL]
- Mas Cristine 1999 Rivesaltes [500mL]
- Les Clos de Paulilles 2002 Banyuls Rimage [500mL]
- Domaine Philippe Delesvaux Coteaux du Layon 2000 Selection de Grains Nobles [500mL]
For the opening act, the most well-known dessert wine of France, Sauternes, hailing from the southwestern region of Bordeaux and produced primarily from Sémillion. The Chateau d’Yquem 2001 Sauternes? Perfection! Rated 100 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Vinous, AND Wine Spectator. From wine critic Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate), “I have had the very good fortune to taste the 2001 d’Yquem perhaps a dozen times since its release and have never been less than absolutely floored by its combination of poise, purity, precision, and layer upon intricate, jaw-dropping layer of flavor nuances. It is among a very small clutch of incredible wines that crash through the 100-point ceiling and rocket beyond the stratosphere! A testament to that magic that can be created when an uncommonly great vintage for Sauternes brings out the best of an extraordinary vineyard and is skillfully, sensitively crafted, the 2001 is a true wine rarity that must be tried to be believed.”
Our second Sauternes, a 2003 Chateau Raymond-Lafon, is also a resounding success earning 92 points from both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator – Unctuous, boasting bold candied orange, and grapefruit peel flavors that lead the way for lush date, glazed pear, pie crust and honey notes. Long and sweet through the finish. Shows the tropical power of the vintage, but stays refined enough.
Now, on to Ardèche, Rhône Valley! Though red wines predominate, the Rhône Valley also makes excellent fruity, full-bodied but dry white wines from Viognier, including this 2003 M. Chapoutier Vionie’ de Paille de l’Ardèche. Deep golden to bronze in color, with generous honeyed sweetness balanced by finely-tuned acidity. A marvelous display of aromas and flavors here – at one moment dried apricots and melon, at another mango, at yet another, a hint of marzipan. Creamy in texture and lingers beautifully on the palate. A wine that leaves you wanting more. At its best with fruit-based desserts, but at its very, very best with desserts containing frangipane cream.
Next, travel to the Languedoc-Roussillon region…. First, a 1999 Rivesaltes from Mas Cristine Estate, which looks down to the shores of the Mediterranean. Made of Grenache Gris, Muscat Blanc, and Grenache Blanc, wines from this area are characterized by an amber robe and aromas of candied fruitiness as they mature in tanks; bouquet retains notes reminiscent of toasty French pastry. Then, Les Clos de Paulilles 2002 Banyuls Rimage. Made of 100% black grenache, this Banyuls exhibits a dark black-purple robe, with intense blackberry jam and succulent rich flavors. This is France’s answer to Port, and the absolute best wine to pair with chocolate!
Finally, the lush and balance of Domaine Philippe Delesvaux Coteaux du Layon 2000 Selection de Grains Nobles. Rated 98 by Wine Spectator: “This is special. The mango, orange, and fig fruit is both dry and juicy at the same time, while the clove, ginger, earth, oolong tea, and mineral nuances build and build in intensity on the finish, which glides despite obvious power. Loaded to the gills, but not heady in the least. Should cruise for some time.”
In summary, three demi bottles [375mL] and four Jennie [500mL] of fantastic French wines – it doesn’t get sweeter than this!

Existing vines planted on the property in the late 1800s by Italian immigrants were still growing at the time of their purchase and Bob nursed these vines back to health as they had not been cared for since the beginning of Prohibition. The first case of Lamborn wine was released in 1982. Howell Mountain was Napa’s first sub appellation – gaining its status in 1983 (same year as Carneros). Along with Bill Smith, Randy Dunn, Mike Beatty and Bob Brakesman, Bob Lamborn was one of the founding vintners who laid the groundwork in creating the Howell Mountain AVA.
Lamborn Family Vineyards is located high on Howell Mountain on a “ridge peninsula” that overlooks Pope Valley and on an extremely clear winter’s day parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains (one of several locations on Howell Mountain and on Atlas Peak where one has such views).
Famed winemaker Heidi Barrett has been making the Lamborn wines since 1997 (formerly at Screaming Eagle, Grace Family among many other premium wineries). Their particular site, the details and micro-management that go into the farming and caring for these grapes, plus Heidi’s considerable wine-making skills produce exceptional wines.
This fantastic twelve-bottle offering is of the winery’s 2018 2200’ Cabernet Blend, which is 100% estate and organically grown and comprised of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (Clone 169) and 30% Zinfandel. It showcases the boldness of a mountaintop Cabernet, lightly softened by the lushness of our Zinfandel; offers fragrances of blueberry, raspberry, and mocha chocolate. With a swirl in the glass the aromas erupt, a fitting tribute to their volcanic soil origins. Mid-palate fine tannins give way to rich and concentrated brambleberry, black currant, and blueberry, rounded out with the lushness of raspberry from the Lamborn’s prototypical mountain Zinfandel. This 2200′ blend showcases both power and finesse in a sumptuously captivating wine, dense with succulent fruits that will have your lips smacking for more. Cabernet/blend lovers rejoice! Extremely limited production (400 cases).

Twelve bottles [750mL] Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon, three bottles each: 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
Upon his retirement from the NFL in 2007, Drew Bledsoe “doubled back” to his hometown of Walla Walla, Washington, to realize a long-held dream. Drew and his wife, Maura, purchased a piece of property on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley AVA and subsequently launched Doubleback as an estate-focused winery with the goal of crafting America’s best Cabernet Sauvignon in an elegant, true to varietal way. Drew had long been planning for this moment during his years playing football and success came immediately as the very first vintage earned a spot in Wine Spectator‘s Top 100 List. Drew hired Josh McDaniels, now CEO & Director of Winemaking, away from Figgins Family Wine Estates where he had trained for almost a decade under their longtime mentor and friend, Chris Figgins. Josh, also a Walla Walla native, has been named a “Washington Prodigy” and a “Game Changer of Washington Wine” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Doubleback remains a small, family-owned winery located on the southern edge of Walla Walla in its new home that was completed in 2018. The winery has four estate vineyards all located in the Walla Walla Valley and all unique to the other. Each vineyard is sustainably certified and farmed by its own incredible farming crew that is an integral part of the team.
This lot includes three bottles each of the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon making a total of 12 delightful bottles.

Blended from the finest barrels of Cabernet in the Schrader Cellar, Old Sparky is a wine for the ages. Magnificent and important, it reveals an extraordinarily dense fruit core, especially blackberries and blueberries, layered with gorgeous notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, sweet earth, and cedar. Profoundly rich, the purity and concentration of this wine is legendary/ the well-woven tannins provide great texture and natural acidity that perfectly support the broad volume of fruit. The 2018 vintage is extraordinary and will continue to evolve and gain further complexity with time in the cellar. This extraordinary complex wine earned a rating of 100 from The Wine Advocate, 100 from Jeb Dunnuck, 99 from James Suckling.
